Fuse board replacement / upgrade.

 

There are many reason that a fuse board (consumer unit) will require replacement or an upgrade.

• A new circuit is required but the consumer unit is full.
• It requires relocating due to other building works.
• The consumer unit will not be able to carry the extra load of an additional circuit.
• It is very old or damaged and has become unsafe.
• The fuses or circuit breakers are obsolete and beyond their serviceable life.
• Recent changes to the wiring regulations (BS7671) include a requirement that most circuits in domestic installations should be protected by an RCD. If an existing circuit is altered then the consumer unit may require replacing if it is not compatible with RCD devices.

 

Before a consumer unit is replaced it is necessary to check that all the circuits connected to it are safe. If there are any faults or unsafe parts of the installation then these will need to be rectified as part of the consumer unit replacement. Upon completion of the work an Installation certificate will be issued that will prove the safety of the installation. This type of work is also included in part P of the building regulations and so is notifiable to the local building authority. A few days after notifying the LBA of the works, you should receive a certificate of notification from them.
